Melbourne Man develops Smart Home system to make your life easier
June 15, 2015
Having a "smart home" means you can control every device in the house with the click on the screen on your smart phone or tablet. Until recently, this technology has been limited to new homes, but Melbourne technology group Environexus has created a solution to retrofit any home. And the business is about to take on the world.
The Environexus solution is a software application that links with a cloud-based server to provide home-owners with real-time information about how much every individual light and electronic device costs to run.
CEO Chris Hall says: "If you've got internet in the home, if you've got a smart phone and an existing light switch, you already have about 80 per cent of what you need to be able to turn it into a smart home. Effectively all we're doing is adding the intelligence to the products they already have."

WANT an alarm to wake you up early on days when the traffic is bad?
Or a house that knows to dim the lights and play Barry White on date night?
A Melbourne smart home system has got you covered.
The Oomi system has the ability to control in-home security, climate, appliances, energy and lighting based on your habits.
Oomi has raised US $870,500 (AU $1,137,611) after being listed on American crowd funding website Indiegogo three weeks ago with more than 1000 people donating.
Chris Hall, one of the developers behind Oomi, is confident the product could raise AU $1million by the end of the 60-day campaign.

Brillo, a cut-down version of Android aimed at embedded devices, and Weave, a framework designed to compete against Apple’s HomeKit API, were among the key announcements from the Google I/O developer conference this year.
Other key announcements from the tech giant include a photo sharing service and app designed to compete against Flickr called Google Photos, a series of major virtual reality announcements, and the latest version of the Android operating system, which is known as Android M.
Oomi vice president Chris Hall says he intends to take a close look at Google’s IoT ecosystem – as long as it doesn’t compromise the user experience for Apple and Windows users.

A new smart home platform with links to Australia has been launched on Indiegogo.
Oomi was created by Fantem, a company that includes Melbourne-based Environexus’ Chris Hall and Shivaun Ryan. The system is designed to intuitively ‘learn’ the way people use their homes and adapt accordingly.
Yes, it has a lot of features (as is requisite these days for IP-enabled systems on crowdsourcing websites), but where Oomi seemingly differs is in its approach to ‘autonomous control’.

Finding your feet in Home Automation
February 18, 2013
It has become increasingly common for the work of an electrician to cross over into what was once considered a foreign realm – home automation. Dimi Kyriakou highlights a new energy management product that could be an easy way to up-sell an existing project.
For those of you who have not yet dabbled in the world of home automation, you’re missing out on a lucrative market that holds massive potential in terms of up-selling opportunities.
Obviously, creating a home automation system that coordinates all security, lighting and entertainment equipment with one-touch control requires an intimate understanding of networking and hardware integration (which requires a lot of training). And while there is a whole industry of installers out there who specialise in this particular sector – at the end of the day, you must remember that the term ‘home automation’ doesn’t always have to extend to every corner of a building and control every piece of technology inside.
